We are so excited to be collaborating with Steve on The Shino Pott this Easter.
Shino pottery originates from Japan and is characterised by thick white glaze, a pinhole texture and flashes of red marks upon firing.
The Shino Pott showcases Steve’s signature speckled style which when combined with our Pott, is a great addition to your home for Easter, and all year round. Each piece is finished in a shino glaze that shifts from pearly white to golden depending on its position in the kiln. The result is beautifully varied, with a speckle reminiscent of eggshells.
We caught up with Steve to find out more about the potter behind the Pott…
1. Sum up your life and work in one sentence — a Potted history, if you will.
Lived in London for 25 years and wanted a change of pace from working in film.. so we moved to Herefordshire, and I became a potter.
2. One thing you can’t do a day without?
Walking my dogs before I start work in the studio.
3. A smell, sound, or object that always makes you feel at home?
The changing season within the garden.
4. What are you cooking right now and do you have a go-to meal for this season?
I'm making a Chana Saag. Tend to do veg curries during these colder months.
5. What are you reading or watching at the moment?
I'm reading The Pigeon by Patrick Suskind.
6. How would you describe your work to someone who’s never seen it?
My work is quite muted, with warm tones of rusty oranges and sage greens alongside pearly whites. It has lots of texture and movement, usually on simple forms.
7. One tool, habit, or part of your process you can’t make without?
Lots of coffee before I start anything.
8. The piece you’re most proud of?
I recently made a simple mug and everything about it works really well. The balance, the shape, the glaze.. I hope to replicate it for my new core series.
9. Where do you find inspiration?
London - Japan House, V&A, Contemporary Ceramics.
10. What’s something exciting you’re working on (or thinking about working on)?
A series of black clay forms, resembling a single block of stone, created for a 2 start Japanese restaurant Humble Chicken in London.
11. Your favourite part of working with Pott this season?
Trying to get the firing right so the whole series has glaze variation from pearly whites to toasty oranges and browns.
12. What do you hope people feel when they bring your piece into their home?
To observe the glaze and see something new over time.
13. A favourite thing to do this season?
Sowing my vegetables.
14. How do you like to unwind after a day at the wheel / in the studio?
Glass of red, sat with the dogs in front of the woodburner during a good film.
